The aircraft was assigned to the 1550CCTW at Kirtland AFB, New Mexico. It had 11 crew members to include 4 PJ's that lost there lives.
The aircraft was on a low level training mission and entered a canyon route that opened into a split canyon and hit severe turbulence, the right wing failed just inboard of the #4 engine. The aircraft rolled over on it back and impacted the ground about 1/4 mile down the canyon. The wing was found by myself and 2 Warner Robins engineers and at that point the entire C130 fleet was grounded on 7 April 986 to inspect all the dry bays trusses and wing boxes. This accident accelerated the 1039 outerwing swap TCTO.
